The 4th National Congress of Export of Medical Services was held within Russian Health Care Week 2023. It was organised by the Russian Ministry of Health Care, the Coordinating Centre of the Federal Project for Development of Export of Medical Services, and the National Medical Research Centre for Therapy and Preventive Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health Care.
Medical tourism is one of the most lucrative types of modern tourism, which not only has a high growth rate, but is also a determining factor in the economic development of a huge number of countries around the world. It is believed that by 2025 this tourist destination will reach a turnover of USD 3 trillion. Now, this market is estimated at USD 439 billion (annual growth should be 11.23%).
Today, medical tourism in Russia is considered one of the priority segments of the tourism industry development. In 2018, Russia launched the federal project for Development of Export of Medical Services for the period until 2024, implemented as part of the Health Care national project. In addition, by order of the President of Russia, a special project office of the Russian Ministry of Health Care for the development of inbound medical tourism was established, which has an ambitious task to achieve our country’s entry into the top five leaders of the global market.
Representatives of interested federal and regional executive and legislative authorities, heads of regional offices of the Medical Services Export Project and medical organisations attended the Congress.
The moderator of the plenary session, Igor Shiryaev, Head of Communication Projects Division of the Department of International Cooperation and Public Relations of the Russian Ministry of Health Care, noted that since 2018, the volume of exports of medical services has grown fourfold.
The participants in the Congress shared regional experience in the development of export of medical services and spoke about the best practices in this area of medicine.
