The importance attached to sports medicine at all levels in our country is illustrated by the impressive list of organisers of the Conference, which is part of the Russian Health Care Week 2020 online programme:

the Russian Ministry of Health Care, the Russian Ministry of Sports, the Federal Medical and Biological Agency, the Russian Association for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation of Patients and the Disabled (RASMIBRI), the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, the Federal Research and Clinical Centre of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation FMBA Russia and EXPOCENTRE AO.

The event is held with support and participation of the Olympic Committee of Russia, the Paralympic Committee of Russia, the Federal Research Centre for Physical Culture and Sport, the International Federation of Sports Medicine, the European Federation of Sports Medicine Associations, the Federations of Sports Medicine Associations of the CIS Countries, the Baltic States and Georgia.

The conference began with an extended meeting of the Working Group on the Development of Sports Medicine of the Presidential Council for the Development of Physical Culture and Sport.

The Head of the Working Group, Veronika Skvortsova, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, opened the meeting by congratulating her colleagues on the adoption of the main sports document of the country for the next decade - the Strategy for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports in the Russian Federation until 2030 - approved by the Russian Government.

According to her, the uniqueness of the approved strategy, lies in the fact that its main line is an inter-agency approach that will combine the efforts of health, education, science, digitalisation, public sports federations, the Russian Olympic Committee, many other agencies, associations and organisations to achieve a 70% involvement rate of our citizens in physical education and sports, and the return to Russia of major world sports games.

For the first time, the Strategy considers sport and sports medicine as two inseparable parts of a single whole. And this meeting is dedicated to the sports medicine aspect of this strategic document, said Veronika Skvortsova.

Oleg Matytsin, Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation, welcomed the participants of the SportMed 2020 Conference. According to him, the 2030 Strategy envisages a wide range of large-scale tasks to improve medical and biological support for the training of the sports reserve and sports of the highest achievements. It envisages not only the improvement of rehabilitation measures, but also the creation of a national scientific and clinical centre for sports medicine at the Federal Medical and Biological Agency which would coordinate clinical and scientific organisations in the field of sports medicine in integration with leading scientific organisations in the field of basic, applied and exploratory scientific research.

The Head of the Ministry of Sport expressed confidence that the Conference will become an effective discussion platform for productive exchange of experience of Russian and foreign colleagues.

According to Alexey Medvedev, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the scientific agenda of the organisations subordinate to the Ministry includes many topics that relate to sports medicine. They touch upon various aspects of body studies, athlete preparation, training process methodology and are conducted at a high level using unique modern equipment.

However, it is also obvious that this field of research is interdisciplinary and must be implemented through the interaction of various teams with maximum immersion in the practice of athletes' training, summed up the Deputy Minister.   

During the first day the participants of SportMed 2020 analyzed the development of the management system of sports medicine in Russia, improvement of regulatory environment for medical support of physical culture and sports in our country, creation of inter-university educational biomedical clusters, shared their experience in medical and biological support of athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
